Cray XT3 Pictures

Cray XT3 is a parallel supercomputer built with AMD Opteron processors. Though there was never a Cray XT1 or XT2, the XT3 name comes from the older T3D and T3E lines. Those older models used DEC Alpha chips, and by a cool coincidence, some of the people who designed Opteron were former DEC engineers. The series continued with the XT4, XT5, and XT6, so you could say the T3D and T3E were essentially the XT1 and XT2 of their time. It is clear that the T3D was named after its 3D torus topology, but that naming convention seems to have fallen by the wayside with later models like the T3E and XT4.

I took these pictures when we finally decided to pull the XT3 out to make room for another rack.
